The proposed wind farm would: 

  • Have a carbon payback of less than one year

  • Generate an estimated £20 million per year for the Shetland Charitable Trust

  • Create around 30 direct jobs

  • Create an average of 140 jobs during the 3-year construction period

  • Include a habitat management plan to protect, conserve and enhance Shetland's local environment

  • Include a heritage management plan empowering local communities to manage their own cultural resources

 

Height of Turbines: up to 145metres/476 feet

Expected generating Capacity (per turbine): 3.6 megawatts

Speed of Blades: 5 to 13 revolutions per minute

Number of Turbines: 103 (reduced from 150 and, later, 127)

Duration of Project: 25 years

Cost: around an estimated £700 million

Materials: steel towers; fibreglass-reinforced epoxy blades
